Newquay locals running the London Marathon for charity

By Andrew | Published April 22, 2015

Jane and daughter Gemma to run the London Marathon

Jane and daughter Gemma to run the London Marathon

A couple of Newquay’s most popular figures, Jane Pinckney and her daughter Gemma will run the London Marathon on Sunday 26th April in support of Cornwall Hospice Care.

Her story is a touching one as her daughters lost both their father and uncle to cancer in 2014 and in their last weeks both spent time in the Hospices.

Supporting Cornwall Hospice Care was the obvious choice for Jane as they’d helped her family greatly, “The care that they, and the families received was second to none and we would like to help, in some small way.”

“So, (as it seemed like a good idea at the time) my eldest daughter and I will be running the marathon to raise money for Cornwall Hospice Care.  My husband and brother in law are doing the Benidorm or Bust Rally in a Peugeot 406 replica of the car used in the cult French movie “Taxi”.”

You can visit their website for details on the Rally and whats been done to the car here.

Jane and daughter Gemma have both previously completed runs for Cornwall Hospice Care and are back in training and geared up for this year’s London Marathon.

Newquay.co.uk wouldn’t be what it is today without the help of Rick Pearce, father of Jane’s two girls, who sadly passed away after a long battle with skin cancer, so we extend our best of luck to them in their fundraising efforts for such a worthwhile cause.

For Jane’s marathon run she set a target to raise of £1650 for Cornwall Hospice Care, which they’ve already surpassed. Her husband and brother in law are doing the Benidorm or Bust Rally with the same target of £1650 – A combined target of £3300.

You can find out more about Jane’s story at JustGiving and how to donate here.

Things are really shaping up at Newquay’s Lane Theatre for the summer season, with two productions well into rehearsals.

The first of the summer offerings comes in the form of Girl Band, a play written by Louise Roche, who also wrote Girls Night and Checkout Girls – both of which were produced by Newquay Dramatic Society to huge success.

Girl Band centres on a three piece girl band that comprises Sadie, Lois and Serena as they go through highs and lows in their relationships. There are even a few musical numbers thrown into the mix, making this a show that really does cover all bases.

Photographer, Carolyn Oakley caught up with the cast this week during a rehearsal at Lane Theatre as well as Director Susie Bundy. Rehearsals are in full swing for Girl Band, which opens Tuesday 2nd June.

The cast, crew and their director all put a tremendous amount of work into making the productions credible and entertaining.

The summer season begins with Girl Band, running from Tuesday 2nd July – Wednesday 29th July, while the second production; Looking for Love written by Raymond Hopkins and directed by Sheila Lines tells the story of the breakdown of a marriage and one woman’s attempts to recover from life’s setbacks. Looking for Love runs every Tuesday and Wednesday between 11th August – 7th October.

For more information about Girl Band, visit the What’s On page dedicated to the show.

If you’d like more information about Looking for Love, find our What’s On page here.

Lane Theatre has also recently started to feature touring shows, comedians, pantomimes and musicians from around the world – bringing a fantastic variety to the Newquay Dramatic Society productions.

Tickets for all shows are available from Lane Theatre’s website and can be booked online or by calling the Box Office on 01637 876945.

This week the Fundraising Team and Care Team at CHSW’s Little Harbour hospice in St Austell were celebrating the return of the Rainbow Run with a practice paint throwing session!

After the success of last year’s event, which saw over 900 people take part and in the region of £60,000 pledged to CHSW, the Little Harbour Fundraising Team are keen to get as many people taking part as possible.

Rainbow Run is a 5k sponsored fun run where participants run, jog or walk through different coloured paint stations where they will get brightly covered powder paint thrown over them.

Kiley Tellam, Events Fundraiser for CHSW said; “This is such a fun event and it was absolutely fantastic last year to see so many people take part in Rainbow Run and support CHSW, we hope that everyone will join us again this year for an even bigger and brighter Rainbow Run!”

Ann’s Cottage are proud sponsors of the event and Owner and Director Rob Harris said;“As soon as we heard this event was happening again, we wanted to get involved.  We are so happy to be sponsoring something so colourful and exciting again, for such a worthwhile cause. It will be a lot of fun so you won’t want to miss it!”

Anyone over the age of 11 years is able to take part in Rainbow Run. Registration costs £13.50 for 16+ and £8.50 for those 11-15 years old. Participants are then encouraged to raise as much money as they can through gaining sponsorship.

To register or find out more about Cornwall’s Rainbow Run you simply need to visit http://www.chsw.org.uk/rainbow or call Little Harbour on 01726 871800

Funds raised from the Rainbow Run will go towards the care and supported offered by CHSW to children with life limiting conditions and their families in Cornwall and Plymouth. Little Harbour children’s hospice in St Austell offers families respite, palliative care, emergency care as well as end of life care and bereavement support.

The multi-disciplinary care team at Little Harbour provides one to one care for the children, giving parents the chance to recharge their batteries, have a break away from their tiring and relentless daily care routines and instead enjoy relaxing as a family again and making precious memories.

Your fundraising for Rainbow Run really can make a difference to the children and families that are supported by CHSW, helping them to make the most of short and precious lives.

Head over to our What’s On page to check out some more great events that are taking place in Newquay this year.
