Secrets @ Lane Theatre Newquay

By Andrew | Published September 13, 2015

Camp Theatre Company presents
Secrets
– a Triple Bill of Comedies by John Mortimer

Mill Hill/Edwin/Knightsbridge

John Mortimer is most famously known for his creation Rumpole of The Bailey but he has been a prolific writer of novels and plays on a wide range of themes. The theme linking these three delightful comedies is that one or more of the characters in the plays has a guilty secret.

In Mill Hill, Peter is contemplating an affair with Denise yet something seems to be holding him back. Could it have something to do with the contents of his cricket bag, what does Sir Walter Raleigh have to do with it and why is Denise’s husband so keen to watch them both?

In Edwin, Lady Margaret awaits the homecoming of her only son. With her are her husband, a retired judge and their bohemian, artistic neighbour. Tension rises as Edwin’s paternity is called into question. What secrets will be revealed, what indiscretions in the shrubbery, what revelations from the hot and sultry summers of their youth? And – the burning question – who nurtured Lady Margaret’s colchicums, her naked ladies, who trimmed her bush?

In Knightsbridge, debutante Francesca brings home her much older fiancée to meet Mummy. Before they meet a confusing phone call heralds the arrival of a stranger which throws into doubt the nature of Mummy’s profession. Why is she advertising a “double fronted lady’s chest” and where did she acquire her expertise in French Polishing?

Camp Theatre is a not for profit Community Theatre Company that celebrated its 21st anniversary earlier this year. The Company has toured Cornwall and Devon many times in the last few years and was last at The Lane Theatre in November 2014 with Richard Bean’s political farce “In The Club”.

National Minority @ Lane Theatre

By Andrew | Published September 13, 2015

Gwary Tek productions presents
National Minority

by Alan M Kent

National Minority is a new play by Alan M Kent, Cornish poet, novelist and dramatist. The play is set in the library of a fictional National Trust property, Rosenanan, and deals with the search for a group of extant papers/ manuscripts called The Sherwood Sermons.

The Sherwood Sermons written by Joseph Sherwood in 1680 remain a fascinating literary holy grail for scholars of the Cornish language. There have been rumours of their sighting over the centuries but they still remain undiscovered. Alan M. Kent’s new play National Minority incorporates this narrative in a literary detective story that takes audiences to a new discovery of identity and change. The play is intimate and thought provoking, and appeals to a wide variety of people interested in high quality theatre, the Cornish language, culture and identity.

The play is brought to the stage by Gwary Tek (Fair Play) Productions and is directed by Jason Squibb from Collective Arts Ltd (and Reverend Odgers in the BBC’s Poldark).

Tickets £8 / concessions £6

Your Fragrant Phantom – Lane Theatre

By Andrew | Published September 13, 2015

White Slate Theatre presents
Your Fragrant Phantom

By Jenna Hobbs

Roaring through the Jazz- Age where the dresses were shorter and liquor flowed longer F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald were the epitome of the 1920’s flapper era. But what happened when the party was over?

Whilst Scott documents their lives in his famous novels, Zelda dances through the night, quickly becoming famous for their elaborate lifestyle and unforgettable outbursts However as their lives blur the lines of reality and fiction, twisted truths and little-white-lies soon catch up with the couple.

Was Zelda the manic and destructive force that the critics portrayed? Could their lives ever live up to the glamour of Gatsby? Your Fragrant Phantom is an award-winning, piece of new writing by local playwright Jenna Hobbs.
Running time approx. 1 hr 5 mins (no interval)

OUTSTANDING SHOW Fringe Review

“Lasting fascination” – The Stage
“A whirlwind of emotion” – British Theatre Guide
“An ode to doomed romance, the show illustrates the destructiveness of human pettiness, but also the endurance and constancy of true love” – Three Weeks

Our guide to Boardmasters 2015

By Andrew | Published August 1, 2015

Whether you’ve been to a festival before or not, Boardmasters is definitely one to tick off that bucket list. Many previous headliners have gone on to become household names in their own right, including the likes of Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard.

It’s not all about the music, though. We’ll take a quick look at our favourite things about the long-running festival.

1. The venue; Watergate Bay

Overlooking the gorgeous coastline around Watergate Bay, Cornwall, Boardmasters is ideally set for you to unwind and listen to a huge variety of acts, whilst sipping on a nice cold Cornish Rattler Cyder. Being close enough to Newquay itself, and yet a festival with camping in its own right – Boardmasters covers all bases, whether you want to rock up and stay locally in the comfort of a hotel or glamp it up in the campsite.

2. The music;

This year’s stellar line up includes upcoming talents such as the soothingly soulful Rae Morris, the funky MNEK and electronic dance group Clean Bandit to name just a few. As well as the supporting acts, this year’s big headliners Bastille will finally get a chance to show their musical prowess following the unfortunate weather that led to their set being cancelled last year. We for one, cannot wait.

3. The surfing;

If you plan on taking in the whole experience, head over to Fistral Beach as well to watch the highlights of the skateboarding and surfing worlds as they take over Newquay’s most famous beach, along with tons of stalls – with plenty of goodies to equip you for the weekend ahead.

4. The After parties;

A string of after parties follow the main events of Boardmasters – ensuring to make the festival spirit carry on right through the night. Dance act Wilkinson are one of the stand-out performers at this year’s after parties.

5. The rides;

What makes Boardmasters even more fun is that it also has a host of rides to keep you going throughout the entire festival. What was that? We can’t wait for this year’s festival either!

The organisers of Boardmasters have also kindly come up with a handy visual to aid your navigation around the site.

Known for bringing the biggest music acts to Cornwall and supporting an array of rising talent, Boardmasters’ live music line-up for 2015 is bigger and better than ever before. Boasting over 100 acts on seven stages over three days, Watergate Bay will be transformed into a music-lovers haven with performances to cater to all tastes.

Surfboat Racing – Watergate Bay

By Andrew | Published July 7, 2015

The third round of the Surfboat Summer Series will be held at Watergate Bay on Saturday 11 July.

Rowers from all over the country will race through the waves in 180kg fibre-glass surfboats to compete for vital points towards the UK Surf Rowers League (UKSRL) overall title.

Each surfboat is manned by crews of five people: four rowers provide the power, and the boat is steered by a fifth person, the sweep.

Teams race their boats from a beach start, through the waves out to a buoy, before returning back to the shore in the fastest time possible.

Having originated in Australia over a century ago, surfboat racing grew to prominence in the UK in the 1970s. In 1999, the UKSRL was established and crews from all over Cornwall began to organise their own races.

The 2015 race series consists of six rounds in which both men and women’s teams take part. Crews compete in three ‘round robin’ races during each event.

Following the event at Watergate Bay, qualifying teams will go on to compete at Carbis Bay in St. Ives on 12 July. The final two rounds will take place in Devon in September and will see six boats compete for the overall title.
