Legend of the Bay

By John | Published April 19, 2016

Who will be crowned Legend of the Bay? Hosted by Extreme Academy and back for a third year on 23-24 April 2016, ‘Legend’ brings together the UK’s best stand-up paddle boarders (SUP) and kitesurfers for one big weekend of high-adrenaline watersports.

Legend is a unique collaboration between the British Stand Up Paddleboard Association (BSUPA) and the British Kitesports Association (BKSA).

Competitors can enter either individual competitions in their favoured sport – a wave jam kitesurf event, or a SUP surf competition – or they can challenge for the coveted title of ‘Legend of the Bay’, which will be awarded to the competitor with the highest combined score from both disciplines.

Conditions for last year’s event were brutally challenging, testing the strength and the ability of the UK’s best watermen and women. Our very own Josh Coombes from Extreme Academy eventually reigned supreme, taking joint crown of the 2015 Legend title alongside reigning champion Dom Moore.

This year, Tina Beresfoot, current BSUPA Womens National Champion, has already confirmed her entry. A local girl hailing from Newquay, she will be representing Team GB at the ISA World Paddleboard Championships later this year. Previous BSUPA Mens Champion Neil Gent has also signed up. Neil is a proficient kitesurf and has come close to being crowded Legend of the Bay in previous years.

Whatever the outcome, Legend is always a nail-biting spectator event from the water’s edge.

The Beach Hut

Don’t forget The Beach Hut overlooking Watergate Bay will be open from 9am-9pm offering the best seats in the house with an Extreme Hot Chocolate in tow.

English National Surfing Championships 2016

By John | Published April 19, 2016

Bring on the waves and the action. The UK’s top surfers will gather at Watergate Bay on the Bank Holiday weekend from Saturday 30 April to Monday 2 May to compete for national titles. If you’re not a competitor, it’ll be a great weekend to ‘take a beach day’ and watch the action from some of the countries top surfers, many local to Cornwall.

Hosted by Extreme Academy at Watergate Bay, the longest-running surfing contest in the country, the 44th English National Surfing Championships will crown winners in 16 categories, ranging from Under 12s to Veterans (45+), in shortboard and longboard disciplines.

The event will also act as the selection competition for the English Junior Surf Team, with winning surfers going on to represent the country at the European Junior Championships, taking place in Morocco in December 2016.

Conditions dependant, we would expect to see heats taking place between 10am and 4pm over the three days with The Beach Hut’s newly covered deck providing the perfect viewing platform to soak up the action, open between 8:30am and 9pm each day.

The event is free to attend. For more information visit: www.facebook.com/englishnationalsurfingchampionships

Lusty Glaze Beach Rugby

Our annual famous Beach Tag Rugby event will be taking to the sands of Lusty Glaze Beach once again in summer 2016. The tournament will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th August, 2016.

The Event:

Our Beach Tag Rugby tournament has been a regular event here at Lusty Glaze since the turn of the century. What was once a few friends running round on the sand, has become a highly anticipated annual event that attracts more than 40 teams from all over the country.

Its Bank Holiday timing makes it the perfect event to finish the summer in Cornwall. On the Friday, there is a one-day tournament, with fewer teams than the weekend, and on Saturday and Sunday, all of the teams will play on both days. There will be live music following the games on Friday and Sunday and after the finals on Sunday, there will also be a spectacular fireworks display on the beach.

The Game:

Tag rugby is a non-contact, fast-moving game that is suitable for adults and children. Its safe, non-contact nature, combined with the fun and liveliness of the sport, means that tag rugby is now the RFU’s official version of the game for under-seven’s and under-eight’s. The use of a tag belt replicates a tackle and is clearly seen when an effective tag has been made.

Tag is a fast-growing version of the rugby game, and the RFU encourages all clubs and organisations to seek ways to organise regular tag rugby activity in a bid to increase fitness and participation.

Wired 1011

Dave Chudleigh, will be performing at Lane Theatre, Newquay to raise funds for local charity Wired.

A bit about the charity Wired:

Wired is the ONLY rehabilitation Centre in the Community of Cornwall that offers conventional therapies and art and craft workshops to people who have suffered from a stroke or acquired brain injury (ABI) as well as long term neurological conditions.

We offer patients Physiotherapy, Psychological therapy, Specialist Massage therapy, acupuncture, music workshops and re-learning to read and write or speak again, additionally art, mosaic glass, craft making; for example cards, painting, drawing and jewellery making. This gives the “hidden” therapeutic value of hand and eye co-ordination and dexterity whilst at the same time socialising the workshop. Outings in the Community mean that patients are able to re-integrate into the Community as well as providing Carer support and respite. We have just finished creating a garden in 2012 that is fully disability accessible and has a sensory element as well as growing herbs, flowers and can be also used as a retreat. This provides a really valuable therapy, working with plants and planning out the garden and eventually we hope to set aside a section as a memorial garden, for patients who have sadly passed on through their condition.

The Producers Blues Band – 25th Anniversary Tour

By John | Published April 4, 2016

One of the most exciting and stylish bands on the circuit, The Producers are among the leaders of the current Blues phenomenon topped by Joe Bonamassa and John Mayer.

The Producers are something really something special, playing the freshest live blues in Britain today. Concerned with feel and attitude rather than slavishly copying ‘hand me down’ American music, The Producers move effortlessly between their own well crafted material and seriously reinvigorated classics stamped with their own characteristic identity.

Celebrating their 25th anniversary The Producers have embarked on a nationwide tour and are barnstorming across the country, building on their already massive audience at sell-out club dates and continuing to develop their impressive reputation that no one can ignore.

Being invited to play prestigious Festival slots is always a sign of a band on its way, however receiving invitations to open concerts for luminaries like John Mayall, Taj Mahal, Dr John, Peter Green and Robert Cray has quickly led to The Producers becoming a major attraction in their own right. With thirteen acclaimed albums to their credit, air play and live appearances across Europe, the States, the Bahamas, Australia and New Zealand, The Producers are playing headline dates and rightfully assuming a prominent position on blues awards podiums.

Dave Saunders and Harry Skinner formed The Producersin 1990. They went on to be one the most popular blues outfit in the country at that time. Winners of the ‘Blues Band of the Year’ award 4 times, releasing 13 CD albums to date, one of which ‘Ain’t No Love in the World’ was nominated for the ‘Best Blues Album’ award..

The Producers highly acclaimed CD and Vinyl record ‘London Blues’ released in 2011 created significant excitement within the blues community and the music industry in general. The album featured guests Paul Beavis (Go West, Low Riders) Andy Fairweather Low (Eric Clapton, Roger Waters) Ben Waters and 5 times blues award winner Paul Lamb on Piano and Harmonica respectively with all the material being self penned originals. .

“25 Years” is The Producers latest album, released to coincide with the tour and reflects the values of their first album (Escape from Muswell Hill 1992) It features 4 new original songs and a selection of old favourites often performed on stage but never before recorded. Thus connecting the band to both its past and its present.
