Sundowner Session Lusty Glaze – Alex Roberts

By Andrew | Published May 11, 2016

Lusty Glaze Beach presents Alex Roberts, free entry, music from 8pm.

Here is an artist who represents all the best aspects of the songwriter’s craft. A casual observer of the world that surrounds him, he draws on its roots, it’s past and present.

A story teller in the age-old tradition, a balladeer, poet and a writer of impressively prolific output, with four studio albums released, and his fifth entitled ‘Love & Supernatural’ due out in 2013.

His songs are shaped, sculpted and coloured by the myriad experiences of his life, from his time spent travelling and absorbing various cultures across Europe and the Indian subcontinent, to his reclusive lifestyle in a tepee.

His is a craft well learned, and invested with depths of emotion and empathy that are unique. Alex blends genres from baroque to blues, with a warm soulful voice, finger-style acoustic guitar, some fine lapsteel playing, bouzouki, and a stompbox to boot.

His writing is honest and direct, uncompromising but often edgy. On stage he threads themes and stories into a timeless and captivating web of song.

‘A gift for storytelling on a British contemporary folk album we can be proud of. You’ll love this album.’
Acoustic magazine

‘Alex plays bloody wonderfully!’
John Renbourn

‘Acoustic beauty and mystery, perfect symmetry between guitar and voice,
powerful yet delicate melodies, with natural grace and sincerity’
Live Music Showcase

‘Outstanding Exemplary Original’
Purbeck Folk Festival

‘A firm favourite!’
Larmer Tree Festival

‘Alex puts his whole self into his performance, no pretentious airs, just honest to goodness delivery. The resulting impact on the audience is stunning. Alex’s music seems to energise its environment’
FATEA Magazine

‘A superb musician, his music blends influences effortlessly and expertly his voice gentle yet passionate, his playing technique contrasting advanced finger-style with sweetly understated parts’
IOW Festival

‘Each tune is more like a holiday and often leaves you feeling lighter and refreshed as it passes’
The Wedgewood Rooms

‘Alexs lyrical flow has a timeless nature; these songs are not bound by fads and fashion, but celebrate the tradition of the folk troubadour’
Devils Music

‘a guitarist with great feel and a songwriter with a wonderful imagination. One of my favourite fireside performers’
Martin Harley

‘The last time Alex played ToneFest, he arrived with a suitcase full of his CD’s.
That’s optimistic I thought. However after playing a truly magical set to the residents of the Free Peace Suite, a set that had FIVE standing ovations, Alex left with an empty suitcase and many more fans.’

Newquay Men’s Gig Championships

By Andrew | Published May 11, 2016

Newquay’s Mens County Gig Championships are hugely competitve and signal the end of Cornwall’s Gig rowing season. Every Cornish coastal community and some inland, with a gig and crew, descend on Newquay Harbour to battle it out for the honour of being crowned Cornwall County Men or Ladies Gig Champions.

These are Newquay’s homegrown Championships, held every year since Eddie Arthur, one of Newquay’s coxswains, first came up with the idea in 1969. Steeped in good fellowship and fun, the first championships took place with the old gigs, Newquay, Dove and Treffry.

Up until 1985 only Newquay gigs were used in the championships, but with the increasing number of clubs entering the event, outside gigs were brought in. Now gigs taking part in the championships are chosen from around the county, kindly loaned by their respective clubs, and are a sight to behold as they take to the sea from Newquay Harbour.

The County Gig Championships are an off shore spectacle and free to come and watch.

Macmillan Charity Walk by ex Tretherras Teacher

By John | Published May 5, 2016

Steve Dunn, pictured above, on a previous walk

A former Newquay teacher is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Steve Dunn taught for many years at Newquay Tretherras Secondary School, retiring as deputy head. Steve wanted to help Macmillan Cancer Support and thought a novel way would be by walking from Newquay back to his childhood home of Torquay. So with passport at the ready (he will be travelling into Devon), he set off on May Bank Holiday Monday.

Here’s Steve’s own words as to why he is doing this:

“I was brought up in Torbay and my mother still lives there. My wife (Julia) and I have lived in Newquay since 1980.

The idea for the walk came from a book by Laurie Lee; ‘As I Walked Out One Mid Summer Morning’. A young Laurie leaves home and sets out to walk across England and then Spain. While in Spain Laurie gets caught up in the Spanish Civil War and is eventually rescued by the navy. I always wished to do something similar (not including the civil war)

So the idea is to walk out from home in Newquay and walk the SW coast path to my childhood home in Torbay, where my mother has lived since 1962.

Starting  the walk on Monday May 2nd and walking approximately 12 miles a day, I hope to finish the journey on Saturday 28th May.  The total distance of the walk is over 300 miles.Julia will join me for the section from St Ives to Marazion and our children (Martyn and Sarah), grandchildren (Teddy and Henry) will complete some of the later sections. Friends are welcome to join me at any stage.

In recent years Julia and I have lost family and very close friends to cancer. The work of Macmillan Cancer Support is inspirational-it is hard to put a value on their support at critical times.

I have always wanted to do this walk and there are absent friends who I know would have loved this opportunity-they will be in my thoughts.
