Radio Newquay edges closer but still needs your backing to ensure it hits the airwaves soon.
Newquay is a step closer to having its own full time radio station as OFCOM announces dates for handing out licences.
Following the recent announcement from the government radio regulator, the team behind Radio Newquay have until July 27, 2017 to submit a full application detailing their plans for the new community service dedicated to the town and surrounding villages.
Community radio stations are different from commercial radio and offer social cohesion and community benefits to the areas in which they broadcast. Radio Newquay will not have shareholders and be a not-for-profit initiative for the town and all about Newquay.
Station founder Mark Chapple says it’s an incredibly exciting time for the town – but time is running out to back the campaign.
He added: “We need to provide evidence to Ofcom that residents, community organisations, charities, schools, clubs and businesses are behind the station. We need your help to prove the need and desire for the station, so we’re asking people to get in touch with their letters of support.
“Our plan is to broadcast from the town with news, what’s on information, surf news and forecasts, water safety information for tourists and provide a free platform for local community organisations who want to publicise their event or activities on air.”
Radio Newquay is now appealing to all local businesses and clubs to send letters of support, explaining why they think a dedicated community radio service for Newquay is a good idea.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response and enthusiasm so far after carrying out a series of presentations detailing our plans. We’ve already got lots of letters and promises of more to come,” Mark continued.
The team need the letters by the end of May so they can collate the information and support in preparation for the July deadline.
You can also contribute by completing the online, five minute survey which will help form the sound of the station. Mark said: “It’s an ideal opportunity to make suggestions for what you’d like to hear on your new radio station. Already we’ve had suggestions for specialist programmes and features, plus ideas on how we might cover surfing events around the town.”
The team behind Radio Newquay also want to feature live music through a weekly programme and specialist playlist dedicated to Newquay’s live music scene. If you would like to feature your music on the radio, now is the time to back the campaign. Please drop the team a letter of support and include details about your venue or band.
You can read more and take part in the survey at www.radionewquay.com or send letters to Radio Newquay c/o 18a Trethewey Way, Newquay, TR7 2AE

Whether you fancy taking part with family, friends or colleagues if you haven’t experienced a Rainbow Run before then this is your opportunity and if you have done it before and loved it then why not get involved again?

Newquay comes alive at Easter time, with lots of family friendly events that will help keep the little ones entertained. Here is our selection of fun things to do during the Easter break. From Egg hunts to live music, there’s something for everyone.
Easter fun at Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay
Blue Reef Aquarium Newquay are hosting an underwater egg-stravaganza this Easter from 1st to 17th April.
The Towan Beach attraction is inviting visitors to take part in an underwater egg hunt where the eggs are hidden amongst the curious marine animals in their displays.
After the egg hunt why not learn all about marine babies with the Nautical Nippers trail and test your knowledge with the quiz. Lots of prizes will be up for grabs.
Don’t miss out on the daily talks and feeds to find out more about your favourite creatures.
If all that is not enough then get crafty in the café whilst having a coffee or spot of lunch and have a go at making a fishy themed egg cup to hold all your Easter egg treats.
.
Blue Reef will also be working with the Sharks Trust to promote The Great Eggcase Hunt. It is the Shark Trust’s biggest citizen science recording project and has entered its 14th year with a whopping 145,000 records.
Ed Wainwright aquarist at the aquarium said; “This time of year we get quite a few people bringing in shark and ray eggs for us to check if there is anything in them. They are usually empty if found on the beach as they get washed up after the animal has hatched. It’s really good that people show an interest and being able to educate in awareness and identification is great for conservation.”
The empty egg cases (or mermaid’s purses) are an easily accessible source of information on the whereabouts of potential nursery grounds and will provide the Trust with a better understanding of species abundance and distribution.
As the Spring daylight is now upon us the aquarium is also extending its opening hours and from 1st April will be open from 10:00am to 6:00pm (last admissions 5:00pm).
For more information head over to Blue Reef Aquarium.

Rose Kimberley will perform at Lusty Glaze on 7th April.
Rose Kimberley has performed as a singer and songwriter since age 16. After completing a degree in Dance at Roehampton University in 2006, Rose moved from Cornwall to Surrey to pursue a career in music.
Whilst writing and performing with her originals band ‘Maker’, she worked at the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) in Guildford as the education co-ordinator for the vocal department until 2009. The opportunity to work with industry professionals (such as Sam Brown and Anne Bailey) inspired Rose to begin working as a session singer. Rose has toured internationally as a backing vocalist for American pop singer Olivia Somerlyn, supporting both Meghan Trainor and Lindsay Stirling. She has also provided vocals (live and studio) and co-writed with various other artists. Other credits include Peter Cox (Go West), John James Newman (The Voice), ERIKA (MIKA, Skunk Anansie) and Nat Martin. Rose’s vocals on Nat Martins 2016 EP ‘Time Is A Healer’ have been aired on Paul Jones’ Radio 2 show.
Rose performs regularly for some of the UK’s top function bands including Motown Supreme, Platinum, 29 Fingers, Chuck Chandler and the Go Go Five among others.
Known for her warm tone and strong emotional delivery, Rose has a unique quality to her voice. She is also very versatile and is able to sing in variety of different styles and emulate other artists where required.
“I’ve worked with Rose doing a couple of session lead vocal tracks and was very impressed by both the quality of her voice and the speed she learnt the tracks. One track in particular, she nailed the complex melody where other singers had failed. The tone of her voice is stunning and versatile and she was great fun to work with as well.”
– Sam Smith (Songwriter and Producer)
