Your Guide to Cornwall Pride - Newquay.

Cornwall Pride is set to return to the beautiful seaside town of Newquay with an exciting feast of celebrations.

This year marks the 11th annual Cornwall Pride festival. Having relocated from its previous home in the county’s capital city Truro in 2017 this will be the second time Newquay has hosted the wonderful extravaganza.

It all takes place on Saturday 25th August in and around Newquay town centre.

12pm: Parade begins at Towan Beach

The Parade at 12pm is a colourful and vibrant event, planned to flow through the streets of Newquay, standing tall and standing proud. Pride welcomes floats, walking bands, dance groups, organisations and charities.

1pm: Parade finishes at the Killacourt1pm: Rainbow Fest at the Killacourt

The celebrations continue at the Killacourt, Newquay, where a whole host of acts are ready to entertain the crowds throughout the afternoon at this FREE event. There will be
Cornwall Pride’s Rainbow Fest is a family friendly event with lots to see and do. There are stalls from organisations and groups within Cornwall and the UK offering advice and support as well as fun games to play, face painting and a whole lot more. There will be food and gift stalls as well as a licensed bar.

Live music will be from 1pm to 7pm
Stalls from many organisations and businesses will be available from 12pm to 5:30pm

There will also be a Dog show taking place at the Killacourt courtesy of St Francis Home for Animals between 2 – 4pm.

Colour & Space Exhibition

A former Cornish university student is unveiling their exciting Colour & Space exhibiton in Newquay.

Colour & Space have announced an exhibition launch of affordable art at Trenance Cottages, Newquay. The exhibition will showcase a collection of etchings, screen prints and paintings from established and emerging artists and will promote enjoying affordable art in a relaxed and friendly environment. Led by former Famouth University student Rebecca Darch.

The display will include etchings by Louise Davies who is a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Her work is inspired by the landscape and reflects the countryside and coast of where she spent her early childhood. Alongside this will be the eye catching screen prints from Brighton based duo Maze who create strong clean patterns and bold geometric shapes balanced with vibrant colours inspired by 1950’s educational book covers, nature and mechanical drawings.

There will also be a burst of coastal creativity from Bold & Noble who create handmade prints that celebrate their love of graphic design, maps and typography. Their designs are printed using traditional methods as well as using recycled or carefully sourced materials. New work will be on display by Newquay based artist Gareth Ellis who has recently taking up printmaking to great success, the prints show his love of Cornwall and depict his favourite views from around the coast.

 

Indulge your creative side with a fresh new look at affordable art. The Colour & Space exhibition will be on display until Sunday 26th August.

About Colour & Space:
Owned and run by Rebecca Darch who has been involved within the art sector for over 10 years. Rebecca has been painting most of her life and studied Art Practice at Glamorgan University 2004-2007, and MA Curatorial Practice at Falmouth University in 2009. Having successfully worked across the South West since graduating the lure of Cornwall and her family was too great and in 2018 returned to her roots and began looking to set up her own business.

Colour & Space is an online gallery that acts as a platform for bespoke curated exhibitions in locations throughout Cornwall and the South West. Exhibiting a range of paintings and limited edition prints that specialise in contemporary design and printmaking with an aim of helping everyone to enjoy everything creative.

Newquay Carnival Week

The Carnival week is always a special one in Newquay, culminating in the annual parade through the centre of town that unofficially starts the summer.

No summer in Newquay would be complete without the carnival and this year there’s a whole week of events and activities for you to enjoy!

With the generous sponsorship donations from various businesses and the main sponsor of Sainsbury’s within the town this Carnival is set to be the BEST Newquay has seen in many years!

Throughout the week leading up to the grand Carnival Parade, Newquay plays host to many events and activities for all the family to part in and enjoy. This year’s carnival week takes place between Saturday 30th June and Saturday 7th July 2018.

Saturday 30th June – Festival Day at the Killacourt – 10:00 – 16:00

MUSIC AT THE BANDSTAND

10:00 to 10:45 – Newquay Junior Band

11:00 to 11:45 – To be Confirmed

11:45 to 12:30 – The Newquay Strings

12:30 to 13:15 – Oll an Gwella

13:30 to 14:15 – Party People

Come and meet a llama and an alpaca, and why not have some fun with the mischevious Newquay Lion! All whilst listening to an original fairground organ. So come down to the Killacourt on the 30th June for a fun packed family day!

Newquay Sessions

Come on down to the Killacourt on Sunday 8th July for the launch of Newquay Sessions – it will be an event not to be missed! Newquay Town Council are proud to host an afternoon and evening jam packed with live music in the bandstand, and best of all it is completely FREE! Have you booked a holiday to Newquay or just visiting for the day and have no idea what to do whilst here? Don’t worry, because we’ve put together a list of 5 of the best places to visit with families that you may want to take into consideration.

Newquay has a plethora of fun-filled attractions suitable for the entire family. There are so many in fact that is been hard choose a final top 5. Our final list is therefore by no means definitive, but gives you a sample of everything that this glorious region has to offer:

1.Explore Bodmin JailBodmin Jail is a unique visitor attraction.

Built in 1779 for King George III, Bodmin jail is the perfect educational yet fun attraction for a family days out near Newquay. Situated about 20 minutes drive from Newquay it is ideally positioned near the A30.

You can explore the cells of the Jail and find out what your life would have been like as an 18th century prisoner. Housing a variety of exhibitions, you can learn about some of the prisoners who were locked up, and the crimes that they committed.

If you want explore a more chilling side of the prison you can visit the execution shed which houses the only working Victorian hanging pit in the UK (might be best to avoid this area if you are with small children!). You will also be afforded the chance to learn about William Hampton who was the last person to be hanged in Cornwall.

Anyone lucky enough to be a holiday guest or holiday home owner at Newquay’s very own 5 star Piran Meadows Resort & Spa is entitled to a 20% discount off the price of tickets to this class leading attraction.

2. Swim at Towan Beach

Just a short walk from Newquay town centre are the gorgeous golden sands of Towan Beach. This is the perfect location for traditional British seaside days out with the family with the safety of visitors being of paramount importance here.

This is evidenced by the presence of trained lifeguards in what is a sheltered location next a harbour which ensures that the the waves don’t get too big for families looking to enjoy a safe and care free time.

When visiting you don’t even need to worry about bringing your own beach chairs, because right next to the beach is the Blue Reef Aquarium where sand chair hire is available for a small charge.

Towan beach is situated right by a thriving promenade where there are countless small shops and cafes you can peruse if you want to have a light lunch or simply fancy a break away from the seaside.

3. Discover sea life at Blue Reef Aquarium

Situated on the Towan Promenade is the Blue Reef Aquarium which is both easy to find and a hugely popular destination for families holidaying in the region.

The aquarium features 40 naturally themed habitats which house a plethora of sea life ranging from local Cornish residents to exotic international sea creatures from around the world.

Take a stroll through the visually stimulating underwater tunnel that runs through the ocean tank and get the opportunity to see reef sharks, shoals of fish & loggerhead sea turtles up close. There is even an interactive rock pool for children to get a little more hands on in what is a fun and educational day out for the entire family.

4. Immerse yourself into a pirate’s life at Pirate’s Quest

If you are looking for an immersive experience then Pirate’s Quest is for you! You will walk through an authentic 360 ̊ set complete with theatrical actors in a thrilling interactive experience which is sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike.

A pirate will lead you through a variety of different settings where you will learn about the history of piracy in Cornwall, wander through 18th century Cornish streets, and learn about the notorious Caribbean pirates.

Visitors will also be tasked with completing their own quest. You will be supplied with a treasure map and challenged to earn some loot in what is sure to be a swashbuckling good time for the entire family.

5. Visit Newquay Zoo

Our top 5 list simply wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t feature a mention of Newquay Zoo which is situated just outside of the town centre and houses over 1,000 of the rarest and most endangered animals in the world.

This is a zoo which focuses heavily on conservation and educating the public, with the main aim being to save animals through conservation breeding. You can therefore rest assured that the cost of your entry is going towards a very commendable and worthwhile cause.

Visitors will get the chance to see the resident lions enjoying their lunch, walk through a tropical rainforest environment with free flying birds and see the loveable sloths in their own tropical house.

You also have the option to book interactive animal experience so that you and your family can get up close to the animals behind the scenes. A popular option here is the Lemur experience, where you will be able to pay a visit to Lemur Island and help the keepers feed these friendly and cute little creatures. With so much to do at Newquay Zoo, it really is a must see!

Resort named in Top 10 Most Instagrammable locations

*Drumroll please* … Newquay has been unveiled as the fourth most Instagrammable destination in the UK.

Research conducted by SafeguardUK has seen the surfing capital of Cornwall make the top 10. They have gathered the all important stats for the hottest, wettest and driest staycation destinations the UK has to offer.

Famous for insta-friendly spots such as the iconic Huer’s Hut, all of its glorious sandy beaches, Newquay Harbour, the Boating Lake and Trenance Gardens, Newquay is a picture all year round.

Their study covered over 600,000 of the Great British public’s Instagram posts to discover the most popular and Instagram-friendly vistas in the country.

Over 47 million domestic holidays were taken in Britain* last year, up 5% on the year before (2016) with the figure expected to rise in 2018.

Michael Bisaro, Head of Safeguard said:
“Our study has revealed that we’ve got some amazing caravan staycation destinations in the UK, with the Lake District, Peak District (and Newquay) topping the charts due to their stunning Instagrammable scenery. We hope that our weather predication maps will encourage more people book a staycation this year.”

With an average daily temperature of 11.8℃ (according to the study), Newquay has a firm place in the top 10 hottest staycation hotspots. While the weather can be unpredictable at times, there’s no doubt that Newquay deserves its place at number 4 as one of the most Instagrammable spots in the country – we’d even argue it should be higher.
