Alternative ideas for a rainy day in Cornwall

By Andrew | Published December 12, 2016

whatever-the-weather-aa
A rainy day in Cornwall doesn’t mean that you need to keep the curtains shut and stay indoors, there are so many options for you and your family to enjoy, whatever the weather.

We have ventured all over Cornwall, testing out the attractions, getting muddy in the puddles and sandy on the beaches. Below we’ve rounded up our top five things to do in Cornwall with kids, on a rainy day.

So grab your wellies and your rain coats and see if you can spot something that suits you and your family, regardless of what the clouds are doing.

1. Dairyland

Dairyland Farm World

Dairyland Farm World, nr Newquay.

Dairyland Farm World, near Newquay offers a fantastic adventure park that is perfect for all ages. From slides to nature trails, tractor rides and pony rides there is so much to do for the whole family.

Watch the cows being milked on this working farm, pat a pet or take part in feeding the smaller farm animals yourself.

If the weather’s not so good, don’t despair! The huge indoor play centre will keep you dry and your little ones entertained. If that’s not enough, then you can take advantage of the huge outdoor play zones or step back in time and wonder through the farm museums, where you can discover the history of Cornish farm life.

2. Newquay Blue Reef Aquarium

Blue Reef Aquarium, Newquay

Blue Reef Aquarium, Newquay

Watch the turtles and sharks at feeding time, come face to face with sting ray and jellyfish, and try to spot Nemo and Dory on your route around. With over 40 themed habitats, Newquay’s Blue Reef Aquarium offers a fun and interactive journey through the sea, for the whole family. Who doesn’t love a day at the Aquarium?

Journey around the Cornish waters and out to the exotic seas before finding yourself at the heart of the Aquarium. Here you will spot a whole array of colourful sea creatures, in the spectacular underwater tunnel. Plus, the Aquarium is nestled right on the beach, which gives you the ideal opportunity to build sandcastles after your visit. Besides, the best sandcastles can be built in the rain.

3. Geocaching

Geocaching is the world’s largest and most exciting, secret treasure hunt! Did you know that in every town, in every city, in every countryside and on every coast path, there are little geocaches hidden around? Geocaching takes place worldwide and anyone can go looking for them. It’s the perfect activity for families and is great for encouraging your loved ones to get outdoors, whatever the weather.

The treasure varies from big boxes with bountiful treasure, to small secrets that take a little thought, wit and some detective skills to find them. It’s also absolutely free to do. Simply download the app and you can start searching for your first cache.

Geocaching is a fitting opportunity to explore some spectacular Cornish routes, even if it’s raining outside. Make a day of it and stop off for a delicious local lunch or a warming hot chocolate!

4. Eden Project

Eden Project

Eden Project

The Eden Project is one of the most special places in the UK, and Cornwall is lucky enough to host such a fantastical place! This adventure is a necessity for anybody’s bucket list.

Taking your children to the Eden Project will teach them so much about wildlife and the different climates that you can experience throughout the globe. The Rainforest Biome and the Mediterranean Biome offer a surreal walk around real habitable environments.

From old huts and houses, to real wildlife flying around, to the ‘Canopy Walk’ where you can actually walk amongst the tree tops, each Biome has surprises around every corner.

If that’s not enough, then rain or shine, the outdoor sensory garden is great for making some noise and splashing about. Look out for the seasonal activities too. In winter there is even an ice rink suitable for all ages!

5. Pirate’s Quest

How do you fancy going on a Pirate’s quest? Cornwall is great at offering an alternative family day-out and there is nothing more unique, than getting to become a real life Pirate.

Pirate’s Quest is an immersive and interactive walk-through experience suitable for the whole family. Your hour long quest starts with you escaping a shipwreck alongside your fellow crew mates. You’ll then make your way through mystical caves, murky streets and an eighteenth century tavern as you locate your new ship. With experienced talented actors meeting you throughout and amazing special effects, your little ones will truly feel like a real Pirate on an adventure.

The hour long voyage books up fast, so make sure to pre-book online. Along the way your crew-mates will smell, see, feel and hear all about Cornwall’s intriguing legends; from King Arthur and Merlin to Smugglers and Giants.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay then Travelodge has a range of great hotels in Newquay.

Have you found a new activity you’d like to try on a rainy day in Cornwall? We’d love to know your favourite hotspots.

Newquay Male Voice Choir – Lane Theatre

By Andrew | Published October 17, 2016

Friday 11th November 2016
7.30 pm

An Evening with
Newquay Male Voice Choir
& Friends

Newquay Male Voice Choir is delighted to be back at Lane Theatre in what seems to be becoming a biennial performance. For one evening only on the 11th November they will be presenting an evening of musical entertainment with the assistance of some special guests.
The choir have been working hard under their new Musical Director, Richard Braebrook, to produce a new Newquay MVC sound which has already excited and entertained very large audiences locally, including at the Newquay Fish Festival, and, further afield, on their recent tour to Yorkshire and Dorset. The choir will also feature its own a capella chorus, Oll an Gwella, who will bring their own inimitable style to a repertoire of pieces ranging from 4-part harmony classics through songs about and of Cornwall to raucous sea shanties. Oll an Gwella proudly represented Cornwall at the huge Festival Interceltique de Lorient held in Brittany in August.
To complement this, the choir are delighted to be joined by soprano soloist, Tamsin Brooks, someone who needs no introduction locally; a Newquay girl with a beautiful voice.
Coming from further afield in the east of the county is Roger James, a funny and delightful entertainer with a fund of Cornish anecdotes and stories. Roger will be making a rare journey westwards and should be assured a very warm welcome.
As if all this was not enough, those attending should be prepared for audience participation, particularly in a finale of songs reflecting the significance of the date of the concert, Armistice Day. Flags and bunting are optional but encouraged!
A reinvigorated male voice choir, an incorrigible a capella male chorus, a beautiful soprano soloist and a humorous raconteur will make for an evening full of energy and entertainment with something for everyone’s taste. And there could yet be even more to be added!

Tickets £7 in advance/£10 on the Door

The Producers (Blues Band) – Lane Theatre

The Producers Blues Band
25th Anniversary Tour

After great shows at the Acorn Penzance and the Lane Theatre Newquay in early July, we have been inundated with requests for a return visit.

So back by public demand The Producers return to Cornwall in October.
One of the most exciting and stylish bands on the circuit, are something really something special, playing the freshest live blues in Britain today. Concerned with feel and attitude rather than slavishly copying ‘hand me down’ American music, The Producers move effortlessly between their own well crafted material and seriously reinvigorated classics stamped with their own characteristic identity.

Celebrating their 25th anniversary The Producers have embarked on a nationwide tour and are barnstorming across the country, building on their already massive audience at sell-out club dates and continuing to develop their impressive reputation that no one can ignore.

producers-bbc

Being invited to play prestigious Festival slots is always a sign of a band on its way, however receiving invitations to open concerts for luminaries like John Mayall, Taj Mahal, Dr John, Peter Green and Robert Cray has quickly led to The Producers becoming a major attraction in their own right. With thirteen acclaimed albums to their credit, air play and live appearances across Europe, the States, the Bahamas, Australia and New Zealand, The Producers are playing headline dates and rightfully assuming a prominent position on blues awards podiums.

Dave Saunders and Harry Skinner formed The Producers in 1990. They went on to be one the most popular blues outfit in the country at that time. Winners of the ‘Blues Band of the Year’ award 4 times, releasing 13 CD albums to date, one of which ‘Ain’t No Love in the World’ was nominated for the ‘Best Blues Album’ award..

The Producers highly acclaimed CD and Vinyl record ‘London Blues’ released in 2011 created significant excitement within the blues community and the music industry in general. The album featured guests Paul Beavis (Go West, Low Riders) Andy Fairweather Low (Eric Clapton, Roger Waters) Ben Waters and 5 times blues award winner Paul Lamb on Piano and Harmonica respectively with all the material being self penned originals. .

“25 Years” is The Producers latest album, released to coincide with the tour and reflects the values of their first album (Escape from Muswell Hill 1992) It features 4 new original songs and a selection of old favourites often performed on stage but never before recorded. Thus connecting the band to both its past and its present.

The band regularly sell out venues around the country, headlining many festivals including Colne, Burnley, Stanley Blues, Dublin Templebar, Cork, Farnham, North Wales Blues Festival and not forgetting the St Ives September festival. Belgium, Ireland, Holland and France played host to Producers tours and a month long tour of New Zealand included playing at the “International Tauranga Blues + Jazz Festival” where they received great acclaim. At the Cognac Blues Festival in France they were joined onstage by headliner Ray Charles’ brass section and, memorably, his ‘Raelets’ shimmying and dancing in front of them!
They were featured in session on the Paul Jones Blues Show on BBC Radio 2 and have been praised by both Johnnie Walker and Bob Harris. Peter Green the Fleetwood Mac guitar legend asked The Producers to provide the support for his first national tour for 25 years, The Producers also featured on the BBC documentary of the Buxton concert.
Harry and Dave front the band ably assisted by Ray Drury on Organ and Piano and Biff Smith on the sticks and percussion.

Tickets £14 in advance £15 on the Door
