Legend of the Bay – Watergate Bay

By Andrew | Published January 24, 2017

2017 date: 1 & 2 April 2017

Find out what happened last year…

Who will be crowned Legend of the Bay? Hosted by Extreme Academy and back for a third year on 23-24 April 2016, ‘Legend’ brings together the UK’s best stand-up paddle boarders (SUP) and kitesurfers for one big weekend of high-adrenaline watersports.

Legend is a unique collaboration between the British Stand Up Paddleboard Association (BSUPA) and the British Kitesports Association (BKSA).

Competitors can enter either individual competitions in their favoured sport – a wave jam kitesurf event, or a SUP surf competition – or they can challenge for the coveted title of ‘Legend of the Bay’, which will be awarded to the competitor with the highest combined score from both disciplines.

Conditions for last year’s event were brutally challenging, testing the strength and the ability of the UK’s best watermen and women. Our very own Josh Coombes from Extreme Academy eventually reigned supreme, taking joint crown of the 2015 Legend title alongside reigning champion Dom Moore.

This year, Tina Beresfoot, current BSUPA Womens National Champion, has already confirmed her entry. A local girl hailing from Newquay, she will be representing Team GB at the ISA World Paddleboard Championships later this year. Previous BSUPA Mens Champion Neil Gent has also signed up. Neil is a proficient kitesurf and has come close to being crowded Legend of the Bay in previous years.

Whatever the outcome, Legend is always a nail-biting spectator event from the water’s edge.

Handplaning Workshop – Watergate Bay

By Andrew | Published January 24, 2017

Otter hand planing workshop

Essentially gliding across the wave with a small float on the end of your arm, handplaning is a simple and joyful pleasure. New for 2017, our handplaning workshop led by James of Otter Surfboards aims to share this exciting feeling with you.

With a background in designing and making traditional timber framed structures, James turned his attention to wooden surfboards. His company evolved from his passion to marry wood, wave riding and the search for a board with minimal environmental impact. Making wooden handplanes was a natural extension.

Otter hand planing workshop

Alongside some other like minded folk on the course, James will talk you through the science and art of making your handplane. He’ll be there each step of the way to offer all the advice and support you’ll need. Worskshops are also suitable for teenagers accompanied by adults.

Otter hand planing workshop

With all tools and wood provided, at the end of the day you will have taken your blank wooden canvas, drawn a template, cut the outline, shaped the rails and smoothed and oiled your plane ready to hit the waves.

Remember you can learn to handplane with a handplaning lesson by Extreme Academy.

Book your place on the handplane workshop at Watergate Bay on Saturday 4 March.

Sunday 5th February 2017 will see the 31st running of this very popular race, organised by the Newquay Road Runners club.

When it was first held on the first Sunday in July 1987, the Miller 10K – as it was known then – was one of the highlights of the Newquay 1900 week festival. That year, nearly 450 runners set off from Whitegate Road, adjacent to the Newquay Sports Centre, surprisingly a figure that was not to be surpassed until the Truro Half marathon just four years ago.

In those days, Sunday morning traffic did not pose the problems of today. The course that year took the runners along the sea front, along Mount Wise to Pentire, before returning to the town and a loop “up” around the Atlantic Hotel. And that was what you called a hill. And then it was back through the town, along the sea front, before finishing on the grass in front of the Sports Centre club house.

A few years later, with the opening of the Gannel link road, a two lap circuit of the town was used, but with ever increasing traffic problems, the race was switched to the old airfield area at RAF St Eval, and became known as the Cornwall 10k. With what was virtually a flat and traffic free course, this venue provided both a safer environment for the competitors, and also an ideal opportunity to run a PB for the distance without having to venture out of the county. Extremely cheap “post race ” refreshments also proved more than popular with some runners!

However, with the opening of the brand new multi million pound sports centre in Newquay five years ago, it was decided that it was time to bring the race back to its rightful “home”. Due to the sheer volume of traffic in Newquay in July, the race date was moved to the somewhat quieter time of October. Last year’s race had close to 550 finishers.

The course now takes the runners out alongside the River Gannel and out towards Crantock, before following the same “outward route” back to the Sports Centre.

Boardmasters Festival

By Andrew | Published January 19, 2017

After last year’s first ever sell-out success, boosted by the glorious weather, Boardmasters returns to the stunning sun-drenched Cornish coastline for another year, giving festival goers the hottest surf and music action in the UK. The festival runs from Wednesday 9 – Sunday 13 August, with the Fistral Beach surfing action kicking off from the Wednesday. Tickets are on sale NOW via the website.

Boardmasters recently unveiled the trio of headline acts to appear at this year’s spectacular.

Indie pop legends Two Door Cinema Club are on an all-time high with the release of their new Top 10 album ‘Gameshow’, seeing the band riding another massive wave of success. The band behind huge hits ‘What You Know’, ‘Something Good Can Work’ and more have soundtracked many a summer. Two Door Cinema Club never fail to deliver and are sure to kick-start Boardmasters in style when they headline the main stage on Friday 11 August.

Two Door Cinema Club – ‘What You Know’:

The ‘Space Cowboy’ himself Jamiroquai will be bringing funk by the bucket load to Watergate Bay on Saturday 12 August.  The multi-platinum groove masters have no shortage of smash hits like ‘Virtual Insanity’, ‘Deeper Underground’, ‘Space Cowboy’ and ‘Cosmic Girl’. The star has more tunes under his elaborate hat than you can shake a bucket and spade at, and will whip the crowd into a funked up party in no time.

Jamiroquai – Virtual Insanity:

Sunday headliners Alt-J  show no sign of slowing down as the eccentric, folktronic three-piece recently scored a number 1 with their second album ‘This Is All Yours’, which earned them a well-deserved Grammy nod. Chilled and electrifying all at once; the shimmering backdrop of Watergate Bay is the only place you’ll want to be as Alt-J close the Boardmasters Main Stage on Sunday 13 August.

Alt-J – Breezeblocks:

Boardmasters are also stoked to announce 16 more new acts. First up are punk upstarts Slaves who tore up the rule book with their raucous, mosh inducing and feel good tunes. Also announced are the beloved singer songwriter Jake Bugg, Andy C who is one of the most iconic figures in global dance music culture, Cumbrian indie pop four-piece Wild Beasts, Patrick Topping – one of the most in demand names in dance music, legendary DJ Roger Sanchez, possibly the most recognisable voice in dance Becky Hill, TQD (Royal T, DJ Q, Flava D), Theo Kottis, Tom Grennan, Solardo, Royal T, DJ Q, Flava D, Cadenza and pop duo Youngr, who will join Two Door Cinema Club, Jamiroquai and Alt-J for a weekend of unforgettable life-affirming performances from the biggest names in music, in the most epic festival setting the UK has to offer. From the first wave to the last beat Boardmasters brings likeminded souls together for a unique festival experience so grab your flip flops, pack your tent and we’ll see you at the beach.

Andrew Topham, Boardmasters Festival Director, said: “We are hugely excited to announce our three headliners and other world-class musical talent as part of what’s shaping up to be the best Boardmasters line up yet. Every year, the biggest names in music and surfing keep Cornwall firmly on the map as the festival continues to go from strength to strength. Boardmasters has an incredible community of dedicated fans who we look forward to welcoming everyone back for another summer of awesome surf and music action on two amazing sites – Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay.”

Inspired by the freedom, adventure and creativity of surfing and music, Boardmasters was born in 1981. Expect parties that run late into the night and a beautiful beach to recuperate on during the day. The 5-day event is situated across two stunning locations in Cornwall – the surfing mecca of the UK, Fistral Beach, where world class International Surf Competitions take place, and arguably the most stunning location in the country to watch live music, Watergate Bay. Last year the grassroots surf and music festival welcomed over 150,000 festival goers to sunny Cornwall. Book your tickets now! Website link
