Woodburner Session: Hollie Rogers – Lusty Glaze

By Andrew | Published January 26, 2017
Another Sessions debutant arrives to the cove in early March. We’re very happy and excited to welcome… Hollie Rogers

“Song-writing reminiscent of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, amazing voice – I can’t believe she’s so young” – Nick Mason, Pink Floyd

“A magnificent and powerful voice” – Suzanne Vega

Hollie Rogers, is an alt-folk singer, songwriter and guitarist whose raw talent belies her years. Blessed with an incredibly powerful voice and songwriting ability, Hollie’s music has become increasingly popular in her hometown of Penzance, as well as in the South East where she now lives. Her live performances consistently receive outstanding reviews in local media, with regular reference to the level of maturity in her lyrics and songs. This positive feedback is also consistent from members of the public, as her airplay on BBC Introducing radio becomes more and more frequent.

Hollie first sparked some local interest aged just 15, when she recorded her first demo. Since then, she has become an accomplished guitarist who often plays with a full band, and with the release of her increasingly popular albums, ‘Let Me Be The Shadow Of Your Dog,” and ‘All That Fire,’ it is no surprise that she has been fortunate enough to support acts like Suzanne Vega, Midge Ure & Paolo Nutini. Hollie recently left a full-time teaching job to pursue a career in music, and having already won Horsham’s Battle Of The Bands competition, it’s no surprise that her fan base recently came together to crowdfund a new EP, produced by four-time grammy nominated James McMillan. The EP is due for release in April 2017.

Woodburner Session: Suzie Mac – Lusty Glaze

By Andrew | Published January 26, 2017

Rumour has it, big things are on the way for Cornwall’s Suzie Mac. This is your chance to hear her amazing voice in the intimate surroundings of Lusty Glaze restaurant… and all for free!

Suzie Mac has always been obsessed with soul music and from a very young age showed quite an interest with gospel and the roots of country music. Her father being a vicar encouraged her to sing before she could talk. She went on to perform in Gloucester Cathedral.

It took a few years later until she started doing gigs and began her spellbinding mission to turn heads while she sang. She has sung at festivals such as Glastonbury, Beautiful Days, Port Eliot and Looe Music Festival to name a few.

She is currently commuting between Cornwall and London working on her first album with writers such as Ian Dench who is a former EMF guitarist, who has written for Beyonce, Shakira and Florence and the machine. Since her arrival on the music scene she has been nicknamed ‘Aretha’ Suzie due to her powerful but sweet vocals. Its no surprise due to influences such asAretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Paolo Nutini, Chaka Khan, Chris Stapleton, Donny Hatherway, Etta James, Fleetwood Mac, John Mayer, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye, Paul Simon, Nina Simone that her power house vocals have developed into something quite unique.

Woodburner Session: Velvet & Stone – Lusty Glaze

Hopping back across the border for their first appearence at the beach this year, we’re stoked to welcome back Velvet & Stone

“Velvet & Stone tread a compelling line between folk, jazz and blues and their Storm EP is a haunting listen – great production and writing”
– Gilmore and Roberts

“Look out for Velvet & Stone. Trust me on this one. They are superb”
– BBC Music Introducing in Devon

Woodburner Session: William the Conqueror

By Andrew | Published January 24, 2017

A firm favourite at the beach and one of our most popular artists, William the Conqueror is back for a stripped back solo acoustic show this February. Rumour has it a new album may be surfacing in the Spring and this is your chance to find out straight from the mouth of one of the nicest chaps in the business!

Once a treasure of the folk circuit, Ruarri Joseph had been leading a double existence, 4 studio albums in under his own name the singer created an alter-ego, William the Conqueror, as a way of being able to play live music away from the obligatory promotional touring, and hit a vein of creativity recording 3 albums of new music in his garage and finally deciding to switch things round, bringing William to the forefront and sending Joseph (at least the persona of him!) back into the shadows.

Bursting with retro-infused energy, there are a myriad influences, underpinned by a taste for good, old-fashioned roots. One minute it’s a hushed JJ Cale that somehow finds its way to an angry Jim Morrison or a 60’s Dylan; the next it’s a grunge era Pearl Jam via Leonard Cohen and a nod to Tom Waits. What is undoubtedly unique is the rich, earnest voice and the poetic nuance of a man clearly wise to the complexities and hardships of love and life.

Woodburner Session: BACHE – Lusty Glaze

By Andrew | Published January 24, 2017

Another talented bunch of Cornish musicians making their Lusty Glaze debut… we’re thrilled to welcome BACHE to the cove!

BACHE is a folk-pop band hailing from Cornwall. The band was formed around the songs written by Cornish singer/songwriter Andrew Bache and now features Phil Brown on Drums and Adam Sparks on Bass. BACHE is known for their upbeat and fun stage presence and their ability to have a room up on their feet and singing along to songs they have never heard before as well as putting their spin on well known songs. Their rapport with audiences is what they are remembered for alongside their quirky, sometimes explicit lyrics.

BACHE write songs about things that we all think and feel but don’t alwayssay out loud. Whether this is through upbeat lighthearted songs, about the things you would like to say to that friend who ‘is a bit of a dick’ or why you shouldn’t talk your ex, to slower more heartfelt songs, about love that’s lost and raising a glass to the future, the lyrics all have a relatable and meaningful story.

BACHE receives regular airplay on local radio stations including a number of songs played on BBC Introducing. His debut single ‘Raise A Glass’ received airplay all across the UK and an open mic tour in November 2015 saw him play at a number of amazing music venues across the UK which led to a full UK tour during the summer of 2016 to promote the ‘Brighter Skies’ EP.

The summer tour saw BACHE play at a number of high profile festivals such as Boardmasters & Bristol Balloon Fiesta as well playing at venues such as The Roadhouse in Birmingham and Alley Cat in London.

BACHE is currently in the studio finishing off their debut album which will be released in the early part of 2017.

Surfaced Pro surf competition – Watergate Bay

By Andrew | Published January 24, 2017

2017 date: 3 & 4 June 2017

Find out what happened last year…

The Extreme Academy at Watergate Bay is super excited to be hosting a new event promoting gender equality in surfing – the first UK surf event to award equal prize money of £2,000 to both men and women riders.

Surfaced Pro at Watergate Bay on 3 & 4 June will focus on equality and showcase the best male and female surfers in the South West. The first event on this year’s UK Pro Surf Tour, judges will be awarding points on skill rather than the amount of waves caught, with each surfer’s two best waves counted and the highest wave score doubled.

The event is being organised by the students from the FdSc Surf Science and Technology course based at Cornwall College Newquay.

Student spokesperson Bethany Osborn said: “We are delighted to announce that we have secured the support of Extreme Academy based at Watergate Bay; an iconic surfing location on the north coast of Cornwall which has an active role within the surf industry and a venue that has hosted many competitions over the years.

Bethany continued: “This is a great opportunity for us to show case the work that we do at the college.”

English National Surfing Championships – Watergate Bay

By Andrew | Published January 24, 2017

2017 date: 29 April – 1 May 2017

Find out what happened last year…

Bring on the waves and the action. The UK’s top surfers will gather at Watergate Bay on the Bank Holiday weekend from Saturday 30 April to Monday 2 May to compete for national titles. If you’re not a competitor, it’ll be a great weekend to ‘take a beach day’ and watch the action from some of the countries top surfers, many local to Cornwall.

Hosted by Extreme Academy at Watergate Bay, the longest-running surfing contest in the country, the 44th English National Surfing Championships will crown winners in 16 categories, ranging from Under 12s to Veterans (45+), in shortboard and longboard disciplines.

The event will also act as the selection competition for the English Junior Surf Team, with winning surfers going on to represent the country at the European Junior Championships, taking place in Morocco in December 2016.

Conditions dependant, we would expect to see heats taking place between 10am and 4pm over the three days with The Beach Hut’s newly covered deck providing the perfect viewing platform to soak up the action, open between 8:30am and 9pm each day.
