Devil in the Detail @ Lane Theatre

By Andrew | Published March 15, 2017

Newquay Dramatic Society presents
Devil In The Detail

by Hilary Mackelden

Director: Susie Bundy

Harry is newly arrived in Hell and he’s not happy about it, he feels he was taken before his time, but Claude Deville isn’t open to appeals. Harry is given an assignment to bring a soul back to Hell in exchange for eternity away from the Sulphur Mines. But Harry has help on his side…

The Mayor of Muddleby, William Green, wants to make money by helping the developer, Claude Deville, buy the town Church, which has no congregation and seems surplus to requirements. Green doesn’t know that Claude is really the devil, and not only does he want the Church, he wants Green’s soul as well. Green is scheduled to die in six months, and if he dies without turning to God, he becomes Claude’s. Things start to go wrong when new Vicar Joe Ketchall arrives. Joe is keen and eager for revival. Worse, he’s praying for Green. Claude sends his best operative, Evelyn to ensure Green does not change sides. He also sends a trainee, Harry. Harry is young and mischievous, somewhat an innocent abroad; Evelyn calls him more of a hindrance than a help. But it is imperative to Claude that Harry damns at least one soul as soon as possible. Will Mr Green fall foul of Claude’s plans, or will he be saved by the power of the Vicars prayers? Will revival happen or will the empty Church die? and why is Claude so keen for Harry to damn someone? All will be revealed as the play unfolds

Oye Santana -The Music of Carlos Santana @ Lane Theatre

By Andrew | Published March 15, 2017

Saturday 24th June 2017

8.00 pm

Oye Santana
The Music of Carlos Santana

What makes Oye Santana so good? First of all the music. There’s a treasury of more than four decades of Santana catalogue to draw on, and every number in our set is a gem in its own right. Then there’s the musicianship. Check out the credentials of Milan ‘Carlos’ Webb; of Gez Kahan and Hector Gomez; the astonishing breadth of abilities that Paul Murphy, Pete Lockwood and Jon Quirk bring to our on-stage set-up. This really is a feast of musical talent.

Next there’s the authenticity. We could go off on self-indulgent flights of fancy, but we don’t. We painstakingly recreate the original Santana arrangements of the big hits that you know and love to bring you the true Santana sound. But playing the right notes is only a start. There’s much more to being the Best Santana Tribute in the World…

There’s the passion. Carlos Santana’s guitar playing is instantly recognizable not just because of his tone or his trademark licks, but because of the emotion he puts into every note he plays. Oye Santana has that covered. And there’s the good-time feel. Every track is a fiesta !

And every Oye Santana performance is a show, a visual feast of lights and action that will have you singing and smiling along from the first chink of a tambourine to the explosive finale. You’re going to love Oye Santana. To see why, click the link to their website, and watch their show-reel.

Reviews

  • Santana and his eponymous band have been blending Mexican passion with rock energy since the 1960s: Oye Santana captures that heady blend with uncanny feeling. Yes, they faultlessly reproduced the music; they are accomplished musicians in their own rights. But more than that, they conjured up the atmosphere, the sheer hedonistic abandon to rhythm that lifts Santana from music to passionate maelstrom. This was no pale ‘photo copy’ of another band …they build a stunning performance.

John Hancock, St Ives Times & Echo

  • You came west and were the best! The comments made by those who saw you on Saturday couldn’t praise the gig enough. The professionalism of the band stood out in all aspects of the gig, from the sound check right through to the encore. And, may we say, what a nice bunch of guys. It’s true what they say: “Close your eyes and you can’t tell the difference” – Oye Santana clearly are one of the Best Tribute Bands Around!

Andy Percy, Anjen Events, Cornwall

  • Santana’s legacy is in the best possible hands.

The Natty Surf Jam

By Andrew | Published March 15, 2017

The Natty Surf Jam:

01/04/2017

The Natty Surf Jam is a one day charity surf festival, hosting a Longboarding Competition at Fistral Beach followed by a night of live music at Whiskers Bar and Venue in Newquay, Cornwall.

The event has been organized in memory of local surfer Nathaniel Loney, who tragically took his own life last year after a long term battle with mental health illnesses at just 25 years old. His sister, Meghann Loney, decided to put on this event to commemorate him and to raise awareness of these issues in the hope of making a positive change within the local community.

The main goal of this event is to raise awareness and support for young people battling against mental health illnesses, and to help them get appropriate treatment early. This year we are working with the local cornish charity ‘The Invictus Trust’ (http://www.invictustrust.co.uk) to help them achieve their goal of installing a treatment facility in Truro.

We also want to represent SOBS http://uk-sobs.org.uk

– This organization offers support and counseling for families of loved ones after suicide and helps to walk them through the grieving process.

The Longboarding Competition will take place on Saturday April 1st at Fistral Beach, and will be hosted by Christian Surfers UK http://www.christiansurfers.co.uk
We are also honored to have champion longboarders Ben Skinner “SKINDOG” and Adam ‘Bearman’ Griffiths on board, who will be firmly behind this project and kindly showing their support of The Natty Surf Jam on the day.

The competition will have two main divisions: an Open Men’s and  Women’s longboarding competition. We are also running an ‘Expression Session’ between heats so that all board users can get involved, as we want this event to be an inclusive, eclectic celebration of surf culture, not just Longboarding!

Entry for the competition will be £20 per contestant and will include breakfast and lunch, hot and cold drinks, a free tee-shirt, a professional chiropractor check-up/massage and also free entry the evening event at Whiskers which is ticketed at £8 in advance and £10 on the door. After covering costs all proceeds will be donated between the charities. Entry to the ‘Expression Session’ will be donation based on the day of the event on a first come first serve basis.

To level out the prize giving all competitors names will be put into a hat then drawn into fantasy surf teams with at least one professional or experienced surfer in each team. The team with the most collective scored points will win prizes from the sponsors. This way its fair on all ability levels of surfing.

After the contest we have a host of great musicians/artists at Whiskers playing until late, along with hosting the competition’s prize-giving. Musicians include Meghann Loney’s BBC award winning band ‘Wildwood Kin’ (a recent favorite of BBC Introducing), so don’t miss out on tickets! Here is a recent Video of them playing a brand new track for BBC Introducing at Maida Vale Studios http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04sdbw5

along with their Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/wildwoodkin

We also have booked Abbie Piper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzfTUTXS0kE
a local young musician from Saint Agnes to open the show before the presentations begin. We are in conversation with two more exciting acts to headline the show, who will be announced over the coming weeks.

Royal Cornwall Show – Nr Wadebridge

By Andrew | Published January 27, 2017

There’s something for every member of the family at the Royal Cornwall Show.

It’s the county’s biggest annual event and is brim-full of exhibits and activities which offer so much in the way of entertainment, competition, information, shopping and all that’s best in food and farming.

It’s a time and place to meet old friends, conduct business, enjoy Cornwall in all its glory and to welcome thousands of visitors from outside our county.

This is our 223rd year and our aim is to keep raising the standard. It’s good for agriculture, good for tourism, good for the economy, the environment and good for the soul!

This is a top agricultural show which attracts increasing numbers of animals, entered into the hundreds of classes which are refined each year. And year on year people travel from further and further afield in the hope of coming away with an award.

Dog and goat sections; rare breed classes. A top flower show and thriving countryside area. Rabbits, cage birds, cavies – even bees get noticed here!

We support and promote Cornish-grown and Cornish-produced food both in the trade section and in our own cafes and restaurants.

Main ring entertainment is mounted on a grand scale and the traditional steam fair is a colourful extravaganza; there are stages and avenues alive with music, song and dance.

You can come to the Royal Cornwall Show with a single-minded ambition to buy a tractor or a car. Here is where you will see them all on display.

Interested in crafts? Planning a wedding? Want to shop in Wadebridge town centre? Is woodland your thing?

Whatever your interest, we aim to make you very welcome here.

Obby Oss – Padstow

Obby Oss

Obby Oss Parade - Padstow
Obby Oss

Obby Oss, which takes place in Padstow on the first of May, is one of the oldest surviving festivals in the UK, with origins in Pagan fertility rites. Padstow’s narrow streets and ancient harbour are extravagantly decorated with flowers, flags and greenery, the focal point of which is a tall and colourful maypole. A grand procession of dancers, accompanied by musicians, follows two faintly terrifying human beings, dressed as horses, as they journey through town pretending to try to grab young maidens. This bizarre dance culminates with the townsfolk joining together around the maypole to sing Padstow’s own unique may song.

Golowan / Mazey Day Celebrations – Penzance

By Andrew | Published January 27, 2017

In the Cornish language, Golowan (or Goluan or Gol-Jowan) means the Feast of St John and it is on St John’s eve, the 23rd of June, that the festivities begin for this revived tradition in Penzance. (The patron saint of the town, the town hall is named for him and in the 1940s the local police button showed the Saint’s severed head on a plate.)

Mazey Day Procession

It is a midsummer solstice celebration by any other name, and bonfire celebrations have been held at this time of year since pre-Christian times. Less pagan celebrations were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries and would fill the days up until St Peter’s eve on the 28th of June. However, fearing danger and damage to property from what had become the standard antics of the festival – namely an abundance of torches, blazing barrels rolled down streets and bonfires reminiscent of Beltane – by-laws were passed to limit the fun and, although it took the best part of half a century, Golowan died out.

Fortunately, in 1990, Golowan was reborn in Penzance thanks to a passionate group of local people. Many of the traditional ingredients of the event were revived, including a Serpent Dance, Mock Mayor elections, fireworks and a quayside fair, and it has become a vibrant community festival which draws everyone out of their homes and flocks of people from outside the town. Colourful flags and handmade banners adorn the streets and seafront, and the whole town takes on a bright hue for the duration.

Everything commences on the eve of St John (or the nearest Friday) with the Serpent Dance, when Penglaz, a fertility figure represented by a dancing horse’s skull, leads a throng of townsfolk through the moonlit streets of the town to the traditional Golowan tune played by the festival band. Torches aloft, the parade eventually arrives at the sea where a display of fireworks marks the beginning of the festivities. Also on the Friday night, a Mock Mayor, or Mayor of the Quay, is elected in a furore of ridiculous promises made by each candidate to a raucous crowd.

Mazey fair
Golowan Eve

The following day, the Saturday, is Mazey Day. Traffic is banished for the day, stalls line the pavements, punctuated by a variety of street acts, and the main thoroughfare is bedecked with greenery gathered that very morning. The highlight of the day is the series of colourful processions which move through the town, the most impressive of which includes children from every primary school in the area. These young Penwithians spend months working with teachers and local artists to produce themed costumes and an array of spectacular giant effigies which they parade alongside through the crowds of onlookers.

The Sunday’s festivities are a more mellow affair, with a multitude of stalls lining the quayside selling crafts, clothes and interesting foods.

The whole weekend is also peppered with a range of musical performances, many with a Celtic feel, and there is always a contingent of fellow Celts from France’s Breton community. Other styles of music and bands from all over the world are enjoyed throughout the day and the evenings.
