New Gardens opening for Wildlife Trust

As part of their 2016 Open Gardens scheme, Cornwall Wildlife Trust has six gardens opening for the first time along with the regular favourites. Number one of these is 2 Trenance Cottages in St. Newlyn East which opens to the public on Sunday May 22nd from 2pm to 5pm.

This lovely family garden has grown and developed during the 30 years the owners have lived there from a small cottage plot to a landscaped garden of lawns and shrubberies, paddock and woodland.

Only five miles from the north coast, the main garden is divided by mixed shrub borders into separate areas to provide more creative plantings sheltered from the prevailing winds while still providing opportunities to enjoy the open views towards St Newlyn East village. The garden features in particular a variety of flowering shrubs, many chosen for their wind tolerance!

Beyond the main one and half acre informal gardens, and marked by a wild flower border, is a two acre paddock and six acre field home for the owners’ two horses and pony and small brood of hens.

An extensive fruit and vegetable area has a thriving 10 year old orchard of traditional Cornish apple varieties as well as several Kea plum trees. Outdoor vegetable beds are gradually being replaced by protected cropping in poly tunnels and, hopefully, new rabbit-fenced raised beds.
Vegetables are just as important as flowers at 2 Trenance CottagesAbove: The fruit and vegetables section of the gardens.

A particular interest of the owners is the propagation of Ulmus minor var. Daveyii, a locally distinctive form of elm.

The entire main garden has level access and dogs are welcomed on leads. Refreshments will be provided. Admission is £4 with under 16s free.

This interesting garden is one of many throughout the county where special fundraising days are being held during 2016 for the Trust, funds which are vital for Cornwall’s leading local wildlife charity in protecting the county’s wildlife and wild places.

Sky colours create magic at 2 Trenance CottagesChris Betty, Communications officer for Cornwall Wildlife Trust says,

“We are really pleased that this year we can offer visitors six gardens to visit that are opening for us for the first time, as well as all the regular favourites. The garden at 2 Trenance Cottages provides a varied use of planting and should be of particular interest to anyone living in a windy coastal environment”.

This is the sixth year running that the Trust has run their highly successful Open Gardens event. More details of all the gardens opening this year can be found at www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/opengardens
