In The Club
By Richard Bean
In The Club is a wickedly funny play encompassing one day in the life of Socialist MEP Philip Wardrobe. Set in a hotel suite in Strasbourg, one of the two centres of the European Parliament (why do they need two?!), Philip has two projects to occupy his mind. Not only does he have to facilitate Turkey’s application to join the political club of Europe but also it is the day selected to impregnate his longstanding partner, Nicola. Throw into the mix a corrupt ambassador, an amorous French lady MEP, A Yorkshire pig farming UKIP politician and a Belgian plumber who is not all that he seems and you have the recipe for two hours of sparkling wit and hilarity. First performed in 2007 prior to a UK Tour, In The Club was described as “…beautifully crafted, well written and as funny as anything currently on the stage”.
Richard Bean has been the recipient of numerous awards for his plays particularly at The Royal Court Theatre and The National Theatre. In 2011 he became the first writer to win the Evening Standard award for two plays simultaneously, The Heretic and One Man, Two Guvnors, the latter also winning awards on Broadway.
