Camp Theatre presents Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s hilarious comedy; The School for Scandal.
Attempted seduction, thwarted love, celebrity marital discord, a family feud.
The column inches of the popular press gossip pages have their readers drooling at the salacious scandal. The tabloid press in 2017 ? No, it’s the late eighteenth century and George the third is on the throne.
Almost two hundred and forty years after its first production The School for Scandal remains as fresh and relevant to modern society as it was when it opened at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on 8th May 1777. A contemporary critic wrote “The School for Scandal is…perhaps the most finished and faultless comedy which we have. People all around are exclaiming ‘Surely it is impossible for anything to be cleverer’. Besides the wit and ingenuity of this play there is a genial spirit of frankness and generosity about it that relieves the heart as well as clears the lungs”.
The School for Scandal is, not without reason, the most performed comedy in the history of British Theatre and promises to delight even the most sophisticated of modern audiences.
