The 2013 Calendar of ThunderCat Racing includes two days of exhilarating competition riding (probably) mighty Atlantic rollers at Watergate Bay at the end of June.
Hosted by The Extreme Academy surf powerboat racers from all over the country will descend on Friday, June 28, with a day of mandatory training, followed by action packed racing on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30.
With thrills and spills guaranteed, this fast-paced adrenaline fuelled powerboat sport is (almost) as exciting for the spectators standing safety on the sand as it is for the daredevils who drive these nippy, noisy and no-nonsense little craft. ThunderCats are four-metre long inflatable catamarans - powered by 50hp outboard engines - which are capable of reaching speeds of up to 60mph.
Each boat is crewed by two - a pilot to steer and a co-pilot to stabilise the boat – and they are driven to achieve the greatest speed possible around the M-shaped course.
This event will see teams earn points across heats throughout the weekend with the chance to earn double points in the final round on Sunday.
Competitors are able to enter one of two categories. The “Pro Stock” category is for the advanced racers, who are allowed to enhance and modify their engines to increase their maximum speed. Beginners are encouraged to enter the “Stock” category where only minor modifications may be made.
It's truly exciting stuff and FREE to attend! So grab yourself a square of golden sand and watch each pilot and co-pilot wage war on their competitors and the elements - all happening just 10 metres from the shore.
ThunderCat Racing likes Newquay so much they are coming here not twice but three times. The second beach they plan to storm is the fabulous Fistral Beach for rounds 11 and 12 on September 14 and 15 and they will return during the second weekend in October for the World Championships to be held at Watergate Bay and Pentewan Sands. Woo hoo!
