Royal Cornwall Show 2012

The Royal Cornwall Show, although not blessed with the finest Cornish weather this year, was still a great day out for one and all - albeit sometimes two days are needed to see everything! The Royal Cornwall Show definitely offers something to be enjoyed by locals and visitors - of all ages and interests - and it is conveniently located within the Royal Cornwall Showground's 100-acre site at Wadebridge.dsc 0927

Two of our pictures show would-be weather presenters, Joanne and her daughter Maisie (aged 5) from Helson, trying out at the BBC TV Spotlight marquee. Jo's husband, Martin said:  "I have attended the show before but it was Jo and Maisie's first time. We all found the show interesting with plenty to do and see for all of us. Maybe next time we will have a couple of days to make sure we see it all."

Newquay Jubilee Celebrations

Newquay's Jubilee celebrations went down well with holiday makers and locals alike. There was a lovely buzz about the town and great to see so many smiling faces and Union flags being waved and bunting fluttering.

The weather forecast for this especially long Bank Holiday weekend was horrendous but - as usually happens - Newquay went its own way. Saturday was blessed with sun and warmth  and Sunday, after early showers saw glimpses of the sun breaking through a grey sky. jubileetuesdayphillizbristol078

Linda from Bristol - Queen for the Day - said: “I don’t come to Newquay very often at all as it is quite a drive from Bristol but decided to do something different to celebrate the Jubilee at a seaside resort in the hope that the jubilee celebrations would bring sunshine and atmosphere. Despite the rain and drop in temperature, I thoroughly enjoyed being a comedy Queen for the day. Being a West Country girl myself, I really enjoyed the Somerset sounds of the Cornish Wurzels, and the Queen was able to have a right knees up to the familiar tunes! I really liked the rock n roll band in the harbour too. And of course, a Cornish ice cream was a must.

“Despite the absence of blue sky and hot sun, all in all, I thought everyone was making the best of the day. As long as I made a few people smile, it was worth making a fool of myself, although my teenage son entirely disagreed and was pleased that nobody knew him. Life is too short to be serious but when you are a teenager, street cred is very important of course! With all the current unemployment and depression going on, I think the celebrations helped lift everyone’s spirits.

“We also enjoyed watching the beacon being lit by the Archer that evening and the blazing bonfire to warm us all up. The people of Newquay were warm and friendly and we were pleased to join them for the Jubilee celebrations. It was quite a bonding experience, uniting everyone no matter where they came from, or who they were. Thank you Newquay – we had a great time! ”

Linda's joie de vivre was certainly welcomed at Newquay's Jubilee celebrations. She made people LOL. Come back soon, Linda, fun people are always welcome in our lovely town!

London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay

Olympic torch bearers got a wholehearted welcome to Newquay as they carried the iconic Flame through this North Cornwall resort. The Flame had landed at Lands End on the morning of May 19 to start the first leg of the 70-day journey around the United Kingdom. The weather was wonderful, the crowds cheerful, the atmosphere awesome and the feeling of unity and excitement was palpable.

A Newquay bride and groom went as far as to bring the time of their wedding service forward one hour to enable their guests to miss the road closures and join the cheering crowds lining Newquay's streets.

RTTS Show 'n' Shine 2012

The annual RTTS Show 'n' Shine had a new location this year - on the airfield adjacent to Newquay Airport. It provided heaps of room and hard standing for the cars and great space for charities and local businesses to say hello but always remember to join this fun gathering early. There were long traffic tailbacks in both directions at mid-day.

Cars and vans of every shape, size and colour were there on display for the dedicated aficionados to gaze upon.
