Newquay News - present & past![]() Temperatures have dropped enough to announce the official arrival of winter, with Christmas in Newquay fast approaching. This splendid North Cornwall community can look back on many successful events. Newquay's surfing credentials as the Surf Capital of the UK was well and truly stamped with the very successful Relentless Boardmasters Festival and Quiksilver King of the Groms but this seaside holiday resort is not a one-trick pony and offers completely different events to riding the rolling Atlantic waves. England polo players competed in Polo on the Beach, an annual exhibition match; the fabulous three day Newquay Fish Festival returned to Newquay Harbour followed by the Men's County Gig Championships also being contested in this historic port. The Lighthouse Cinema Newquay hosted the inaugural British Surf Film Festival and buzzy little Zapcats challenged each other and the elements at the end of September on Fistral Beach. This was the location, too, for Newquay's Funday Dog Show which drew a splendid pack of local and visiting competitors, large and small. Truro got thousands in the mood for the festive season with their splendid City of Lights Festival and Parade, swiftly followed by Newquay's Christmas Lights turn-on and fantastic fireworks display and the families' favourite - Newquay's Santa's Grotto in Trenance Cottages.
