Christmas in Newquay - Lights On!
Christmas in Newquay started properly on November 25, when hundreds of people gathered on Station Parade to join in the fun of the annual turning on of Newquay Christmas lights. VIP guest Daphne Skinnard - Assistant Managing Editor of BBC Radio Cornwall - did the honours.
Once the switch was flicked, the festive procession started it's journey through the illuminated streets of Newquay on its way to Newquay Harbour.
The procession formed up behind the Cambourne Youth Brass Band - who stirred the Christmas spirit with their music - starting with
- Father Christmas on his sleigh
- Daphne Skinnard and other town dignatries walking within the Guard of Honour provided by the Air Cadets of 781 (Newquay) Sqn Air Training Corps
- Closely followed by children with their hand-made lanterns.
When they reached Marcus Hill The Rev. Canon Michael Adams blessed the tree, and after conducting another countdown, its lights were also turned on.
Three joyous and popular Christmas carols were sung by the hundred of people gathered before the procession continued its journey to Newquay Harbour.
Once arrived, the Brass Band played again before a spectacular fireworks display kicked off the fabulous finale to the evening. Great crowd, great fun, great lanterns, great music and great community spirit. Well done all those volunteers who worked so hard to make the evening another great success for Cornwall's favourite seaside town! Proper job, one and all.
