Newquay's Laid Back Lifestyle
... dream the holiday and, one day, live the dream!
Lifestyle - Come live the dream in Newquay![]() The lifestyle in Newquay appeals to the majority of visitors who holiday in Cornwall's favourite seaside resort. They love Newquay's relaxed way of life and yearn to join the laid back residents in this utopia of scenery, sun and sea. As newquay.co.uk is an independent enterprise dedicated to promoting the best of Newquay we seek to present a positive, unbiased, view of the resort but sometimes our friendly town, and its hard working people, gets such a kicking from the press it cannot be ignored. The following tongue-in-cheek "news" report was sent to The Sun newspaper in an attempt to balance their story published on July 4 about “teen revellers”. Not surprisingly this has not been posted on their website. So, as you read through the article below and see how easy it is to put a sensational spin on the most innocent of events, consider how great it would be if all the tabloids could do something constructive to promote the Newquay Safe campaign to encourage youngsters to stay safe, be good and act responsibly while celebrating their end of term exams.
A newquay.co.uk EXCLUSIVE - how it all kicked off in Newquay on Sunday night. What a pity the Sun reporters who spent Saturday night in the town couldn’t stay around until Sunday when the action in Newquay really kicked off. Not only were the police and ambulance crews out in full force but we also had the fire brigade trying to get from one end of the town to the other – flashing blue lights and all – with loads of people blocking the way.
If all that wasn’t exciting enough I was close enough to witness the Mayor of the town parading himself through the streets dressed up like Elvis Presley.
There were also a number of press photographers rushing around trying to capture all the action and you can see some of the picture they took on this newquay.co.uk website.
When I asked one of the policeman what was happening he said this sort of thing had been going on for years and they have to close off the main streets just so all these people can carry on “enjoying themselves”. It surely is a funny old world when you can report on something that is so worthwhile and enjoyed by virtually everybody and make it read like another sinking Sun sad story. Hey ho.
I also saw and heard many, many people in large and small groups thronging the streets making all sorts of noise on a whole bunch of musical instruments that they had obviously brought with them and there were more inflatable guitars than you could count - even if you were stone-cold-sober. For the hundreds of local residents and the thousands of holidaymakers who had been walking around the town or sitting out on what had been a lovely sunny Sunday evening, it was quite a spectacle and many of them were filming all these unusual goings-on with their mobile phones.
There was one particular bloke in a group that were all dressed up as pirates who had a parrot in one hand and a big gold cup in the other. They couldn’t all have been stag or hen parties because there were small children all dressed up as well. If I had been a real sinking Sun reporter I would tell you that there were some kids who didn’t have any fancy dress to wear who were just sitting in the gutters watching it all go past them. Funny though, unlike that other reporter, I didn’t see anybody crying or being sick, if anything everybody seemed to be having a really great time but apparently there’s no news in that.
At one point they even had the lifeboat out and there was one local dude who, despite all these hundreds of people heading towards him, was determined to finish what he had set out to do and simply carried on riding his bike towards the sea - with his surfboard clutched under his arm.
Still with a bit of low key investigative reporting – just like the proper Fleet Street reporters used to do – I soon found out that all the noise and jumping around that went right through the town for what seemed like hours on end was just the Newquay Carnival, organised by the local Lions Club to raise money for good causes.
The Easter Egg Hunt
games for all. Refreshments were provided and music, too. Although entry to the Fayre was free, visitors were invited to make a small payment to help swell funds for the continuing restoration of Newquay's iconic Trenance Cottages by entering the ever-popular Easter Bonnet and Fancy Dress competitions and there was a special free entry for smaller children’s cuddly toys. There can't be too many locations better than Trenance Gardens for duck racing - the floating yellow plastic species that is. Lots of children took a turn or two on the colourful roundabout so thoughtfully included in this colourful and exciting community-led annual event, organised in aid of the Charity Trenance Cottages Newquay, owner of the properties.
